Impression: Nintendo DSi XL
As a fan of the Nintendo DS, there is no doubt I will get either a DSi or a DSi XL. When DSi is announced, I waited because I need to save up my money to get one, by then DSi XL has already be announced. So I waited for that instead and I am glad I did.
DSi XL, the XL surely means something, is practically the bigger version of DSi. So on the date my local game shop sells it, I went to pick it up as I couldn't wait for it to be officially released in Singapore. I do not want to risk breaking my DS lite as it is the only system that can play DS and GBA games. So I went to pick up the Burgundy(Known as Red Wine in Japan) and a protector. The DSi XL came in two colours in the US(Burgundy and Bronze) and three colours in Japan(Those two colours with a Natural White)
When they first tell me to inspect my DSi XL, my first impression is "OMG, BIG ASS". I felt that way is because I have been using my DS lite for years. A sudden big change in size just give me a "WOW" impression. Now that I have been using my DSi XL for a good couple of days already, I am ready to give my impression on it.
The selling point of the DSi XL is definitely is the big screen. Upon reaching home, I can't wait to play it and so I charge it immediately as the guy instruct. After few hours of charging, the first game I pop in was Phoenix Wright. OH MAN, the big screen just looks gorgeous. Even with such big screen, it was not pixelated or stretch at all. It definitely make the game more enjoyable.
So the next game I pop in was Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days. Now it does look abit pixelated, but not so much of a problem. So now in my mind, does alot of game on DSi XL cause pixelation? So I went on to try on another 10 randomly selected game. The result is positive, 9 out of 10 looks amazing. So there is definite no worry that your DS game will looks like crap on DSi XL. If you are interested, the game that looks bad on it was Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, but it not that bad until it is unplayable.
When using DS lite, some of the game doesn't have a soft reset button so you got to off your game and change it. However, DSi XL make it more easy. The on/off button also serve as a home button where it will take you to menu screen. From there you can re-choose your game, hence it reset the games much easier than DS lite. However, if you would wanna change game on the menu screen, it is possible. You just got to take out the current game and put in the new one and the DSi XL recongnize it immediately.
The DSi XL also have two camera, a voice recorder and some other games in the package. The DSi game with three installed title(which is also available in DSiware) so it is definitely a bonus. There is also internet explorere, it is ok, but not the best experience of an internet experience on a handheld. To be surprise, some DSi games uses those function which means that normal DS lite could not play them. But most of them are just DSiware.
So what is DSiware? DSiware is basically a shop like apple App Store, where they sell small game at a small cost. But instead of using money or credit card, they use a point system. You can either buy the point by cash or credit card though. Then the point will be transfer into your DSi or your account(Not sure about this), and you can buy game and it will be deducted from there. If you are wondering if you can just put DSiware onto microSD and transfer, the answer is no.
A DSi XL is still a DS, which means most of the game of the DS is playable on the DSi XL. Yes, most. This is because some of the game needed the GBA port to play, one good example will be Guitar Hero. Which also means that these kind of games is only playable on DS phat and DS lite.
In conclusion, a DSi XL is definitely a great system. The good point surely wins over the bad points. The only few bad points I would say is the weight of DSi XL is rather heavy. Another point would be not being able to play some of the DS games.
